2nd Annual Fundraising Gala Dinner

In order to meet our mission and extend our services in our community, we rely on the generosity of individuals and businesses for support.To acknowledge all our supporters and volunteers for their continuous help and to carry our efforts further, HAI will be hosting The 2nd Annual Fundraising Dinner on April, 2016. Our event will be chaired by Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, Director of Outreach for the Dar Al Hijrah Washington DC. We also invited Mr. Elijah Reynolds, Arabic lecturer at the Santa Clara University, USA, as a keynote speaker. Our youth program will be coordinated by Mr. Omar Ewing. Our event will also feature some entertainment by Alsalam Band.

Gala Dinner:

As a non-profit organization, Horizon Academy Institute depends on support from sponsorships to make our events the best they can be. Whether it’s assistance with sponsoring food, supplies for children’s crafts, prizes or even with the general costs of much larger events, any amount of cash sponsorship or products/ services to auction off are very much appreciated.

Imam Johari Abdul-Malik

Imam Johari Abdul-Malik is the Director of Outreach at the Dar Al Hijrah Islamic Center and former Muslim Chaplain at Howard University (HU) and was the first Muslim officially installed as a chaplain in higher education at HU and is the Head of the National Association of Muslim Chaplains in Higher Education. The imam also, serves as the chair of government relations for the Muslim Alliance in North America. He is the director of community outreach for the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center and President of the Muslim Society of Washington, Inc.
The Imam is known nationally for his fundraising efforts for masjids, schools and relief and support organizations. Brother Johari is a founding member of the Muslim Advocacy Commission of Washington, D.C. He Lectures on a variety of subjects that motivate the Muslim community and the community at large to better themselves and their world.
Imam Johari is a regular khatib (preacher) for the jumah sermon/prayer and halaqah/study circle presenter on Friday evenings at the Howard University (musallah) prayer room. Educated at Howard University with BS Chemistry and a MS Genetics and Human Genetics. Completed Clinical Post Graduate Training Program in Bioethics at Georgetown University Kennedy Center for Ethics. Completed PhD course work in Bioethics/Genetics (Degree Pending).

Imam Johari Abdul-Malik fell ill and has asked Sheikh Mohamed Ahmed Elsherif to chair the fundraiser on his behalf.

Sheikh Mohamed Ahmed

Director at International Islamic Youth League of Africa, Mohamed Ahmed received his higher education and training from Al-Azhar University, where he studied the traditional Islamic law & sciences under prominent scholars such as the former Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr Ahmed Al-Tayeb the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar.

He has studied at the Center of Christian-Muslim understanding at Georgetown University The interfaith summer institute 2008 and Vanderbilt University's Divinity School 2012 which is of the top five schools in the United states, before he visited Harvard University School of Law and Divinity School as a visitor scholar as a part of US state Department program.

He was most recently the director and Imam of the Islamic Center of Nashville, where he spearheaded several interfaith initiatives across the city including with members of the Tennessee legislature, the governor, the Methodist Church and the southern baptist convention.He also travels to Muslim communities around the country & all over the word giving Islamic educational lectures and seminars and many interfaith programs. He has also taught Arabic at institutions like the University of Georgia. He holds ijazat, or traditional licenses, in Islamic law, Qur’an, and Hadith ( Al-Bukhari & Muslim, as well as the six books of Hadith) and is a Hafiz al-Qur’an (memorized the entire Quran since he was 10 years old). 

Mr. Taoufiq Cherkaoui

Mr. Taoufiq Cherkaoui is a Language Advisor to the British Council and a Principal Examiner for Edexcel Pearson Exam Board. Taoufiq is also a Lead Practitioner of Modern Languages, Religion and philosophy.
Taoufiq also works as an Education Consultant for Cambridge University International Examinations. He joined Cambridge CIE in 2011 following over twelve years working as an education practitioner in the UK, France and Morocco. As an Education Consultant he completes a number of training sessions, in Kazakhstan and Egypt, on education strategy, and summative item writing for languages.
Taoufiq often takes part in international seminars and conferences by presenting talks and running workshops relating to education, and teaching and learning. He has experience of curriculum development and schemes of work development for modern languages through working with the British Council and Cambridge University CIE.
Taoufiq is interested in all aspects of current research and theory relating to teaching, learning and education. He was involved with research studies with the University of Warwick, Edge Hill University and Leeds Metropolitan University.
In his spare time Taoufiq enjoys reading, travelling, philately, music and playing the acoustic guitar.

Mr. Elijah Reynolds

Mr. Elijah Reynolds is a PhD Candidate in Linguistics from Indiana University where his dissertation is on Arabic phonology. He completed the BA in Linguistics at IU in 2004 and the MA in Near Eastern Languages & Cultures at IU in 2007 under the close supervision of Dr. Salman al-Ani.
Mr. Reynolds currently serves the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Santa Clara University as a Lecturer, and he is an affiliated faculty member to the Arabic, Islamic, and Middle East Studies Program. Primarily, teaches Modern Standard and Levantine Arabic, as well as topics on Arabic sociolinguistics, Arab Identity, and the Qur’an. He is a Visiting Faculty and Curriculum Developer at Bayan Claremont Islamic University where he teaches Classical and Modern Arabic online.
His primary research is in Arabic phonology and morphology, while his secondary field of research addresses the Muslim intellectual tradition of linguistics, namely Ṣarf, Naḥw, Balāgha, and methods of Quran interpretation and exegesis – Tafsīr and Ta’wīl.
In his copious free time, Mr. Reynolds run the Academy of Quranic Linguistics in the San Francisco Bay Area where he teaches and gives lectures on contemporary linguistic approaches to the Quran in light of the classical Islamic tradition of Tafsīr.

Youth Program:

Enjoy your Gala Dinner and get your kids to enjoy an inspirational Youth Night with the youth coordinator, Omar Ewing & some entertainment with Asalam Band.

Ages 9-14 years

Children up to 8 years old must be registered for the babysitting program.

Kids under the age of 14 will not be permitted to enter the banquet hall.

The Youth Program starts on Saturday April 2nd, 2016 at 6:00 PM. The following shows the schedule of the program:

Mr. Omar Ewing

Mr. Omar Ewing is a father of a 10-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy. Omar has over 20 years of leadership experience with a passion of providing ongoing feedback and customized coaching to youth. The youth are our future, so he works with organizations and area masajid on developing meaningful succession planning to prepare the youth to fill key leadership positions. Mr. Ewing is a certified trainer and HR professional that uses his skills and training to help better make a more vibrant and engaged community.

 

 

Babysitting Program:

Enjoy your Gala Dinner and drop off your kids for a fun evening Babysitting Program; they will not be permitted to enter the banquet hall.

Children ages 9-14 must be registered for the Youth Program.
