4th ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA DINNER

Horizon Academy Institute (HAI) Takes a Major Step Forward towards Establishing a Long Term Educational Trust by Building an Ivy League Islamic School KG to grade 12.

 

To acknowledge all our supporters and volunteers for their continuous help and to carry our efforts further, HAI will be hosting its 4th Annual Fundraising Gala Dinner on April 07, 2018

Dr. Reda Bedeir - Fundraiser

Shaykh Reda Bedeir, PhD, carries a life-time worth of achievements. From the land of Egypt, he was invited by the University of Calgary to teach Quranic Classical Arabic, and also served as an Imam for the Calgary Islamic Centre. He then moved to Burnaby, BC to serve as Imam the Muslim Chaplain at Simon Fraser University.

Shaykh Reda holds two Bachelor’s degrees, one in Islamic Sciences with Al Azhar University, one Master’s degree, and a PhD with Al Azhar University in Applied Linguistics and Tafsir of Surat Yusuf. He has learned under prominent shuyukh such as: Dr. Sayed Noah, Sh. Abdul-Rahman Abdul-Khaliq, Dr. Salah As-Sawy, Dr. Muhammad Yusri and Dr. Abdullah Barakat.

Shaykh Reda has worked in numerous fields including as a UN Interpreter and Translator, and has authored many researches and papers. He currently serves as a sessional Instructor in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program of Religious Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta.

 

Dr. Nazir Khan- Keynote Speaker

Dr. Nazir Khan is a physician, Imam, and consultant for the Manitoba Islamic Association’s Fiqh (Religious Affairs) Committee. He is a specialist in the field of Diagnostic Radiology and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He has memorized the Qur’an and received traditional certification (ijazah) in the study of the Qur’an, Hadith and Islamic theology (aqeedah). His expertise in both medical sciences and Islamic theology uniquely positions him to address challenging contemporary questions regarding faith, reason and science.

Dr. Khan’s work as an Imam has gone beyond conventional roles and expanded new frontiers for the Muslim community in Canada in many ways including hosting a Muslim Mental Health Fair bringing together thirteen mental health agencies to meet the Muslim community, presenting a seminar on Advance Care Planning and End-of-Life decision making at the Mosque in collaboration with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, and co-presenting a workshop on preventing Domestic Violence representing a collaboration between the Manitoba Islamic Association and the Winnipeg Police Services. He has also taught an introductory class on Islam to the Winnipeg Police Academy. Dr. Khan is the founder and lead author of Spiritual Perception.org, a website dedicated to exploring exciting new avenues integrating classical insights on Islamic theology and epistemology with contemporary research in psychology.

 

 

Sheikh Navaid Aziz - Master of Ceremonies

 

Navaid Aziz is a Canadian Muslim public figure with a diverse academic and social background.He is currently focused on the education and integration of Muslim youth, with the hopes of eradicating radicalization. He was raised in Montreal, Quebec where he completed a diplome d’etudes collegiales in commerce and Social Sciences from Champlain College (2000) before heading to the Islamic University of Madinah where he completed an Associates Degree in Arabic Language and Literature (2003) and a Bachelors in Islamic Law (2008).

 

Upon returning home to Canada, Navaid began teaching for Al-Maghrib Institute. He has since transitioned to their Director of Public Relations and Student Affairs. During this period, he volunteered as the Islamic Editor for Little Explorers Magazine and began his work as a youth and family counsellor. It was also during this time that he established himself as a sought after public speaker. He has lectured across four continents and eighteen countries thus far.

 

In 2012 Navaid moved to Calgary, Alberta to become the Director of Religious and Social Services for the Islamic Information Society of Calgary, a position he currently holds. He also began volunteering as a chaplain at SAIT (2012-2015). In Calgary his youth counselling work extended further to include helping in the mitigation of criminal radicalization. This included the implementation of civic engagement opportunities for Muslim youth. Among the programs started were youth groups, volunteer programs at the local shelters, community cleanups, and tree planting days. In 2015 Navaid became the first ever Muslim chaplain with the Calgary Police Services. Through his involvement with CPS he consulted in the development of their world renowned redirect program. He is currently working on establishing further opportunities for preventing radicalization and enhancing youth integration.
